Regina, SK – Week One

Welcome to YQR, the Regina Airport

So I’m typing this entry as I sit in a rather dark Regina airport on my birthday, a few minutes before boarding. I will say that being away from home on your birthday is an unfortunate side-effect of working remotely so often.

Anyways, to give you some background on Regina and my trip, there are some things that seem to be common knowledge, and some that definitely will surprise you:

  1. Regina, like most of Saskatchewan, is incredibly flat
  2. Regina’s population is approaching 250,000 – the city’s feel is very different than Calgary or even Edmonton, and its unusual being able to drive from one side of town to the other in 15 minutes
  3. The Saskatchewan Legislature’s surrounding park is one of the most beautiful provincial government building and area ever seen.
  4. My first day of food in Regina was mind blowing – seriously the best contemporary food I’ve had in the last year.

The Saskatchewan Legislature

First off, the Saskatchewan Legislature. Their legislature is nothing special. The area around it though, is. The legislature overlooks a large stream, which is so large that an entire running trail encompasses it. The ‘lake’ portion in front of the legislature is large enough so that users can practice their canoeing, and is large enough so the birds and even the random RC boat pilot can use it. Aside: A random couple asked me to take their picture… After a while of trying to use their camcorder to take a picture, I offered to take a picture for them and send it (to which they agreed!). I really couldn’t help it.

Secondly, there is a hidden gem in the middle of the prairies – The Creek In Cathedral Bistro. If you’ve been following me on Twitter, I really couldn’t stop raving about how good the place was. I even called Michelle during my meal to tell her that this has been some of the best food I’ve had in a while. More details about The Creek In Cathedral Bistro to come!

I’m rather pleased with the trip out here to Saskatchewan. I’m patiently waiting for my flight back to Calgary now, and will hopefully sleep in my own bed tonight.
